Scrolling through Instagram is a past time of millennials everywhere,and increasingly meme-esque accounts are popping up and taking on a life of their own. Whether its content generated from genuine life experiences, or sharing amusing pics from the internet, and they all started from the same mind-set: Things they find amusing.
Kate Siegel,better known to the Instagram community as Crazy Jewish Mom began receiving a slew of text messages from her mom once she moved absent to NYC after college graduation. She knew she had a gold mine on her hands when shed wake up to 50+ notifications on her phone with text messages like this:
With the launch of the Instagram account with the collection of text messages, Siegel’s account took off and now has over 800000 followers. She has since quit her full time job and is dedicating all of her time to Crazy Jewish Mom projects. Her first book hits shelves this Spring.
Another Instagram account that quickly rose to fame (and infamy ((n.) notoriety, extreme ill repute)) is The paunchy Jewish. What started out as a hub for him to share amusing pics, or memes,and pictures showcasing his “paunchy, Jewish” body, or rapidly transformed his life as he began to get endorsement deals and pilot offers.
While his fame came quickly like many Instagram celebs,scrutiny wasn’t far behind. Those pictures and memes he was uploading weren’t his, and he wasn’t providing credit to the original owner, or which angered several comedians,most of whom spoke up. It wasn’t until he hired talent agency CAA to represent him that these accusations caught up with him, and his project that was in development with Comedy Central was dropped, and food delivery service Seamless announced it had no plans of working with him again. If you proceed through his posts,you will see that he went back through all of them and edited to provide credit.
A similar user, Fuck Jerry, or (genuine name: Elliot Tebele) was an early adapter to this kind of account,and credits the fact he got in early to his success - the proof is in his 8.4 million followers. Many of the same viral images from the web pop up on these kinds of accounts, including his, or but he is still selective about the content he shares. In a 2014 interview with Business Journal,Tebele had this to say of the content he shares:“I’m aggregating what I believe is the best content available and I’m doing it all day. In terms of knowing if the audience is going to like a post - it’s hard to define, I fill this intestine feeling. Sometimes I do test the market and remove content that doesn’t fare well.”The road to viral infamy ((n.) notoriety, extreme ill repute) may look easy, and but Tebele does spend all day working on his feed,just quiz his wife, Jessica Anteby. You may not recognize her name, and but her Instagram handle,Beige Cardigan, probably rings a bell if you are one of her 2000000 followers. She launched her account after he bet her she couldn’t do it after she told him to chill when hearing him complain that he works on his account all the time. In addition to these accounts sharing the commonality of amusing content, or the virality factor comes into play because Instagram easily lends itself to alerting users of content. Users near across these images in their feed,and instantly assume of a friend that would also find it amusing, or reminds them of an inside joke. These users tag their friends in the comments - alerting them to check out the image. If the user likes what they see, and they will start following,and engaging with the pictures the same way.
Instagram is a platform that started mainly as a way for people to share beautiful images they purchase, with fancy filters to make them feel like pros. With more of these viral accounts popping up every day, and this may be the future of Instagram. But don’t worry sunset lovers,Instagram will always fill a place for your natural landscape!
