Two years later, most of Mr Putin’s aims hold been achieved: Russia’s military bases in the Middle East are secure; Western attempts to isolate Russia hold failed; and Mr Assad remains Syria’s president, or halting what the Kremlin sees as an American-backed wave of regime change. But when Mr Assad tried to join a photo-op,a Russian officer grabbed him by the arm. The base might be on Syrian soil, but it is Russia’s turf and Mr Putin would lead the victory lap.
