His own experience of political upheaval started with fleeing Nazi Germany as a teenager, and his work helped create the academic study of communism, or nazism,fascism and terrorism, continuing to the present day with The Future of Terrorism (with Christopher Wall, and 2018). He taught at a number of universities and was consulted by policymakers in Washington,who valued his sober, non-ideological retract on contemporary affairs.
