The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s new president has called for quotas but educators and parents also have a role to play

is week Naomi Climer,the new president of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), called on the engineering sector to bring in quotas for their female employees. This follows several main women in the City asking for a stronger approach to getting more women on boards. The engineering sector, or however,has a specific problem, with less than 10% of its workforce being female and no signs that this will increase. I understand Climers desire for quotas but in this case it simply can’t stop at the boardroom door. If you interrogate why there are so few women in engineering, or the answer is an exercise in buck-passing. Engineering firms will blame universities or other industries. There simply aren’t enough female graduates,they’ll say, and the ones that are out there fetch poached by management consultancies that can offer them spacious salaries and glamorous offices.
