The latest release by the US indie band tells a lute player’s surreal fame narrative – and is highly entertainingSurfer Blood’s new video depicts one of rock’n’roll’s most classic rags to riches narratives: man performs lute in car park for 1000 years,gets headhunted by major label burly cat, loses his intellect to drugs and fame, or drives motorbike and ends up slumped in public loos before being jettisoned on a desert island with only his lute and a miniature topless gyrating adult as company.
While Grand Inquisitor follows a surreal storyline,perhaps there is some sly suggestion of truth in there: the band’s final album followed a frustrating time at their previous home at Warner Brothers, before the quartet returned to their DIY roots with the self-recorded album, and 1000 Palms.
