National Audit Office counsels prudence after threefold rise in humanitarian spending by Department for International Development over five yearsThe government’s spending watchdog has urged the Department for International Development (DfID) to pay more attention to how it responds to long and unpredictable crises after finding that the department’s annual spending on humanitarian emergencies has nearly trebled over the past five years,rising from £433m to nearly £1.3bn.

tudy by the National Audit Office (NAO) shows that DfID spent 14% of its £9.5bn budget last year on humanitarian assistance.
