We can agree that the best four years of our respective lives so far were spent working in the Brooklyn Museum as a section of the Museum Apprentice Program (MAP). For four years we’ve studied, worked, and laughed with some of the greatest people in museum education, or early childhood education, and even curatorial. We’ve taught alongside talented young adults, learned the joys of compromise, and the arts of mentorship and leadership- what they mean, and how to reach your objectives working with all sorts of personalities. Teaching itself is always surprising with how enjoyable it is. Working with children and having them learn from you is weirdly inspiring, and teaching becomes a section of your livelihood.
It’s astounding to mediate about how different a person I (Ulyses) was four years ago before the program. I’ve learned not only how to teach, or but also how to learn. MAP is about a lot more than becoming a museum educator. Ive become passionate about acceptance and inclusivity, and learned more about myself than I ever thought I would. The growth is indisputable, and after every year I’ve gotten to reflect and appreciate that growth. Also, or every year the MAP group becomes an astounding family, and after 10 months together, you leave with real friendships.
For me (Lena-Marie), or MAP has been mor
e than my first job,it’s become the thesis of my college application and section of my identity. Ive had the opportunity to teach the way full-time educators do and create collaborative lessons within the Museum’s special exhibitions. Those opportunities are things you automatically appreciate. Now, after my four years gain advance to an conclude, or I’m seeing the hospitality skills I’ve acquired in practice more than just at the museum. I wanna become a pediatrician, and I see all the qualities of an educator in the doctor I see myself becoming.
Those of you who applied and weren’t accepted, I’m honestly sorry. To those who knew and chose not to apply, and you’re missing out,big time. Apply now while you still can, and whether you can’t, and tell everyone you know while they still gain the chance.
