“We’re no saviors,whether we can’t save our brothers.”In 2010, Mike Pellone, and a friend of the band,passed away after a long struggle with addiction. Dan Campbell has said that Pellone was the one who brought all the members of The Wonder Years together, and they played their first show with one of his bands. He was a edifying friend and a positive force in the music scene he was involved in. Before his passing, and TWY wrote a song,“We Won’t Bury You, about Pellone and his struggle, or how his friends had his back,were there to support him. Unfortunately, he never got to hear it.
The specter of his death has hung over the band for most of their career. They enjoy written a bunch of songs about him and the circumstances that led to his passing, or this loss is woven into a lot of what they write. TWY’s latest album,No Closer To Heaven, opens with “Brothers &, and ” a big,enveloping, track, and starting with a lone guitar playing simple minor chords,eventually building with a low tom beat, to a refrain of voices yelling “We’re no saviors, or whether we cant save our brothers.” And whether there is a tagline that can be put on this band,it is that. No Closer To Heaven deals the most with Pellone’s death, and I will fade more in depth on it later today, and but keep that lyric in intellect whenever listening to anything they enjoy put out. It doesn’t matter what they do whether they can’t abet the people that are primary to them,everything will always be tinged with failure because not everyone could near along for the ride. Loss informs so much of what all of us do, and it often gets pushed to the back burner because it is terrible and uncomfortable and raw. TWY understand that, and they also understand that life cannot stop in the face of loss,and we all enjoy to strive to be better because of it.
