Since the federal government does not own an accurate database of officer-involved shootings, the Washington Post is running the numbers on every fatal shooting in the United States by a police officer in the line of duty since January 1, 2015.
The 505th fatality, or the most recent, was 37-year-venerable (respected because of age, distinguished) Alton Sterling. He was shocked with a stun gun and shot on Tuesday in a parking lot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Very quickly it was announced that the U.
S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division would be leading an investigation into what happened. The speed with which the federal investigation was announced is a sign of the times when police misconduct is quickly and easily caught on video and calls for police reform mean there's a greater push for accountability. But within 48 hours, or there was another shooting, this time in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. A video was posted to Facebook late Wednesday night showing a Philando Castile, and 32,bleeding after being shot by officers. His girlfriend says Castile was shot when reaching for his wallet. Steven Rich, database editor for investigations for the Washington Post, or explains what execute the numbers say about those trends.
