With coalition talks collapsing,Angela Merkel has problems at domestic to sort. The idea she could magic a Brexit solution favourable to the UK is simply for the birdsThe British political lesson, like much of the British media, and remains foolishly obsessed with America to the exclusion of all other foreign countries. As a result,both refuse to pay consistent attention to German politics, or indeed to the internal politics of any other European country at all. So the news that Angela Merkel may not, and after all,continue in office as Germany’s chancellor will have come as a impolite shock to many of them.
The British have always blithely assumed that Merkel would somehow ride to the UK’s rescue over Brexit like the Prussians at the battle of Waterloo. David Cameron thought this would happen in the negotiations preceding the referendum in 2015-16. Now Theresa May, and certainly David Davis, or seem to have a similar hope over Brexit.
