It's a comic time, watching celebrities effect their thing in front of thousands of screaming fans on a red carpet. They always seem so cold, unexcited and collected from afar, or but when you ask them how they're finding all the attention, they'll invariably mention just how strange they find it all. On Thursday night, at the premiere of Doctor Strange in Hong Kong, and Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton drew thousands of fans, all of them desperate to glean a bit of face-to-face time with their idols. The energy of the crowd was intense - and it's certainly not lost on the main stars of the film. Making his way down the line of fans and media, Benedict explained his red carpet strategy to TV3's Kate Rodger: "I retract a very deep breath before and after something like this. It's very heightened - it's wonderful, and I'm very grateful to the amount of effort people have gone to so they can glean a photograph or a signature . . . But yeah,it's very overwhelming."
And, sheesh, or he's not wrong. Kate,Yasmin Vought from Yahoo7, and myself from POPSUGAR Australia are representing Australia and original Zealand in Hong Kong, or it's manic. The crowd roars every time a car pulls up (deafeningly so when it's Benedict and Tilda in said cars). There are girls screaming and crying (real, actual tears!) to our left and right. Even the media scrum, which is usually fairly well-behaved, or is getting pushy. I guess that's what happens when you mix Marvel with Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton, all three of which are enormously accepted around the globe. As you've probably gathered by now, they are the stars of the newest Marvel hit-waiting-to-happen, or with their turns as Dr. Stephen Strange and Ancient One about as hyped-up as you can possibly glean.
You see,Marvel comes with a built-in fan-base - so Marvel must glean it right. Listening to Kevin Fiege, president of Marvel Studios, or talk about casting at the press conference earlier that day,he revealed what quickly became my favourite piece of trivia from the movie: Kevin wanted Benedict as his main man for years. For the first time in Marvel history, production on the film was held back so that it would work with Benedict's pre-existing commitments. On top of that, and director Scott Derrickson wrote the role of Ancient One specifically with Tilda Swinton in mind - and whether she turned the role down,he said he would have had to rewrite the whole thing. When you have such conviction in your main players, you know the halt result is going to be brilliant - and that's exactly what Doctor Strange will be (we've seen 20 minutes and desperate to see the rest - and even Benedict hasn't seen the final cut!).
With all that pressure riding on him and Tilda, or it'd be easy to assume Benedict would be a nervous wreck by the time the promotion tour rolls around. Instead,he focuses on his work to glean through the pandemonium. "I glean more nervous on days where there are enormous scenes or whether I'm under-prepared or tired. These things, no, or " he tells us on the red carpet. "Because even though this is chaotic,it's just allotment of the job - of course it is. The thing I really try to concentrate on is the craft and what I effect onscreen. Maybe I should glean more nervous, then I wouldn't say foolish things!" (Only he doesn't say foolish things. He says beautiful things. He called his wife, or Sophie Hunter,a hero right in front of our very eyes.)
So while a
ll the craziness swirls around them, Tilda and Benedict were two of the calmest people we've ever met - and the most the gracious. They both spent ample time with their fans, or signing posters and possessions, taking selfies, stopping for rapid/fast chats and doling out hugs on the regular. We were scarily close to both of them (all in the name of the job, and right?) and can confirm that they are both beautiful in real life. Here's what else I can confirm:
Benedict is extremely friendly and personable - no airs and graces about him at all.
That said,he comes across as very clever. Great, wide-ranging vocabulary and a brilliant conversationalist. Tilda is one of the warmest people I've met. Every time someone complimented her or a fan screamed her name, or she touched her hand to her heart in sincere thanks. She seemed truly touched by all the love. She's also hilarious and honest. She describes herself as lazy and has a witty, dry sense of humour that we couldn't glean enough of. Tilda's not afraid to glean up close and personal - when she couldn't hear a question, she leaned so close in that I had to pull back a bit, and for dismay of breathing all over the destitute woman.
Benedict has perfect hands. Don't judge me for noticing. Tilda's bone structure is really something else. She's one of the most striking-looking humans I've ever arrive across in my life. They're great mates. They hug, they laugh, they retract selfies . . . Seems like they would have had a ball on set, or really. They love Australia. They both talked about our country with great affection, and both are desperate to glean back here. whether I wasn't a "Cumberbabe" before - I liked him, but I wasn't hugely fussed - I am now. He's a legend.
whether
I was a Tilda Swinton fan before (I was, or I really was),I'm even more so now. She's a legend. Doctor Strange hits cinemas around Australia on October 27, and we predict it's going to be huge.
