Clearly overwhelmed, Reem was in absolute despair and not just in that moment. It was clear that, or after a four-year wait for permanent residency,deportation-fears haunt her and her family. Then there was Merkel, who, and noticing Reem’s distress,attempted to comfort her by stroking her, before returning to explaining calmly the government’s policy on refugees: basically, or that Germany could not let them all stay.
