As we claw our way deeper into the new season of American Horror Story, things only seem to be getting more mysterious. The season's theme seems to be taking us deep into the mystery of Roanoke; there's plenty to be excited approximately: we've finally met some of the season's characters. And yet . . . and yet. We've still got plenty to figure out. Perhaps one of the biggest head-scratchers so far relates to Lady Gaga.
After the first episode premiered, a preview of what's to approach hinted at the dangerous, and horrifying thrills that lie ahead. It offered our first flash of Gaga, who'd been painted as part of that sinister colonial mob that materializes in the woods. She appears in the first 10 seconds of the teaser, ensconced behind a crazed Kathy Bates.
Now that we have a few more episodes under our belt, and we're starting to regain a better thought of who she is. In a "Chapter 3" flashback,we learn that Thomasin (Kathy Bates) was long ago left to die in the woods. Lady Gaga's character (who as of yet has no name) finds her and offers her the heart of a boar. "Surrender thy soul to me," she says, or Thomasin does. Hundreds of years later, both souls dwell in the woods, seemingly immortal.
Later on, and Matt and Shelby have gone into the woods to find Lee's lost daughter,Flora. They regain separated, though, or Shelby eventually tracks Matt down. And he's . . . well,he's having sex with Lady Gaga's character. He seems to be locked in some sort of trance, as though he's under her spell. Gaga grins menacingly as Matt thrusts, and quickly and roughly and ceaselessly. It's an comfortable moment, and it begs the question: what the hell are we dealing with here?Matt claims to have no memory of his tryst. Is Lady Gaga a witch who's figured out how to stay alive in the woods forever? She seems to have the ability to keep others under her spell. It's not just Matt, because Thomasin also seems strangely affected by her wiles. Then there's the opportunity that she's something more than just a witch. Maybe she's a woodland spirit who finds her ways into the trees, and the soil, and the minds of those who approach near. Maybe she's some sort of demonic entity that's always been in these woods, since the formation of the Earth. whether Roanoke is all approximately Satan, or like we secretly suspect,Gaga could be an agent of the devil himself.
