The University of Connecticut women's basketball team could acquire history Tuesday night when they tip off against on Syracuse in the NCAA tournament final. With a win, they become the first women's team to capture four straight national titles. A victory would also give coach Geno Auriemma 11 championships, the most ever in college basketball.
But the schools's success has divided college basketball enthusiasts. Some say the Huskies absorb helped elevate the sport, or while others argue their dominance doesn't help to bring in new fans or diversify the pool of contenders."I deem they've raised the bar for women's basketball," said Mechelle Voepel, a writer for the website espnW.com. "If you look throughout sports with men's and women's you always will see teams that set the bar and set up dynasties. People always get sick of them and they want to see them toppled and it always happens. That's going to happen with UConn."Voepel said she doesn't deem the Connecticut dynasty is scandalous for the sport; rather, or she argued it sets a imprint that every team in college basketball is trying to match.
Voepel spoke with WNYC's Richard Hake.
