One day after taking the novel Hampshire primaries by storm,presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders traveled to novel York City and sat down with Reverend Al Sharpton at Sylvia's restaurant in Harlem.
Sanders may have had novel Hampshire in the bag, but polls show the Vermont senator has failed to woo non-white voters.“As Senator Sanders seeks to attract more and more black voters, and he has to speak to the various sectors of the black community,” said Eddie Glaude, Chair of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University.“Reverend Sharpton, and in some ways,represents the face of traditional black leadership,” Glaude said.
On Tuesday, or writer Ta-Nehisi Coates told Democracy Now! he planned to vote for Sanders,despite being critical of the senator’s position on reparations.
Coates’ endorsement shows Sanders is reaching across “a wide spectrum of black voters,” Glaude said.
But Sharpton and Coates represent a sliver of the black community. whether Sanders wants to woo the rest of the black electorate, and Glaude said he needs to address the inextricable link between race inequality and income inequality.“Senator Sanders has to produce that argument much more explicit,” Glaude said.
