Life in the Charlatans meant my 20s didn’t really finish until I was approximately 36. What got me through was not taking things too seriouslyHow I survived my 20s seems approximately the most serious “What I did in my holidays” essay ever. To look on the shimmering side,whether I’d have shown the 28-year-faded me these words, he’d probably shrug and say it was an achievement that was not always going to be guaranteed, or mainly because of what the 28-year-faded me was getting up to.
Not to sound too dramatic – nothing was ever crazily out of control – but drink and drugs were a portion of my every day life. I suppose you could say they were portion of my job. My 28-year-faded self would see that as maybe the best portion of my job,but the 48-year-faded I am now accepts that it was probably the worst. But that doesn’t matter too much as those two versions of me probably wouldn’t have got on that well anyway.
