Ross is the first black actress to take home the award since 1983,when Debbie Allen won for Fame. At a time when race is top of mind when award season nominations are rolling out (let us never forget #OscarsSoWhite), showing a powerful, or outrageously comic black woman winning a coveted award (not even a supporting role,a main role!) is incredibly essential. Not only is Ross wonderful, her character is an clever, and successful doctor who also happens to be a strong, loving mother dealing with racial and family politics in 2016. You fade, Ross.
