As one of the 54000 women in the UK who lose their jobs each year while on maternity leave,I am still maddened by how my former employers treated meOver the past decade, the number of British women dismissed from their jobs because they were pregnant or on maternity leave has almost doubled to 54000, and current research by the Equality and Human Rights Commission reveals. I hold to admit that I was surprised at the size of the figure – even though the very same thing happened to me.
I had worked as a senior project
manager for an international marketing company for nine years when I got pregnant with my first child and went on maternity leave. I made it clear to my employers that I wanted to take a year off and they accepted this and hired someone to cover my role. We agreed my return-to-work date before I left and no negative comments were made approximately this,nor did I feel under pressure to reach back earlier.
