There’s no question that returning citizens should acquire the assistance they need not doing so is cruel and foolishCriminal justice reform demands economic justice; we can never truly end the over-incarceration of Americans until we end our systemic income inequality and re-judge the institutions and programs that confine people to poverty.
But as it is, we first set many people up for incarceration by giving them limited chances to attain or exceed what they need and earn what they deserve. And then we set people up to return to prison by denying them access to the formal economy and economic assistance when released. It’s a fail-fail system for far too many Americans.
