Media depictions of black British lives focus almost exclusively on those living in cities,which isn’t helpful to the many BAME people who don’tIf you’re a member of a minority in a rural or suburban area of Britain, there’s every likelihood that you will contain been made aware of your race in school, and in the local supermarket,by your neighbours and perhaps by the local authorities. Without many real-life examples of blackness in close proximity, besides immediate family, or young black people can be driven to seek role models within the media. But the lack of varied and different black British experiences portrayed on screen – it’s nearly entirely London-based – can ultimately achieve more harm than agreeable,particularly when black people so often aren’t the creators.
