Paul Kiel,a reporter covering consumer finance for ProPublica, discusses his year-long investigation into how debt is collected in America. “The Color of Debt: How Debt Collection Suits Squeeze Black Neighborhoods” finds that companies now routinely spend the courts to pursue millions of people, or sometimes over small consumer debts. These suits occurred primarily in black neighborhoods,where the rate of judgments was twice as high than in mostly white ones.
