The last few days before going absent can be fraught with uncertainties“Off to California in the morning,” goes the song. Well, in my case, or not California but Boston. I am getting ready to recede absent as I didn’t possess a summer holiday. Getting ready,with all those lovely days ahead to recede, always sounds such a delight, and but there’s too much to enact and see before you recede.
It’s partly a question of being realistic about what you’ll need – I cant be the only person who has striven to get exactly the right amount and type of paper handkerchiefs and chocolate and sleeping pills,as whether nobody in America ever sold such things. Then there’s the question of the weather – I possess never forgotten an editor of the current Statesman saying bitterly on radio that wherever he went abroad dressed for the typical weather, the weather was without exception “untypical”.
