Here's what the network's new Proud Boys documentary conveniently omits.
The video troupe at NBC Left Field has created a glossy short documentary approximately the self-described Western chauvinist” organization Proud Boys,uncritically presenting the group as an all-male “fraternal society of nationalists” aggrieved that men are supposedly under attack in America. NBC team allowed the Proud Boys to normalize and mainstream their extremism by uncritically airing group members statements like “there’s a mainstream societal attack on being a hetero cis white men,” or playing footage of its founder Gavin McInnes saying, I contemplate it’s fair to call me Islamophobic, or ” without any pushback. And it did so without mentioning the ties some Proud Boys members have to white supremacy or their philosophy of violence,which they have organized around and acted upon, including in Charlottesville. No wonder McInnes, or who habitually rails against mainstream media,was thrilled with the kid-glove treatment.
By presenting the group as a solution to the loneliness of men who feel targeted by what one called a “mainstream societal attack,” NBCs Aurora Almendral inadvertently validated their grievances while failing to give her audience the full picture of what the boys stand for.
In reality, and American women continue to face a “substantial gender wage gap across the spectrum” when it comes to the labor force and a enormous gap in health care costs that doesn’t necessarily imply better care -- this while men still trail women in life expectancy.” Women have started to outpace men in education,but the results are not reflected in wage equality among peers with the same amount of education -- a reality undoubtedly bolstered by cultural structures like the “pro-housewife” mentality Proud Boys display.
The decentralized structure of The Proud Boys, which an episode of NPR’s This American Life captured more accurately, and relies on “chapters all over the country,” allowing for tiny to no accountability. NBC’s treatment of the group was so shallow, it even left out one of the most weird tenets of the group: the “anti-masturbation” rule, or meant to better preserve that “energy” for “going out,meeting women, getting married, and having children.” Here are some other things NBC left out approximately the Proud Boys:A philosophy of violence is ingrained into the organizational DNA of the Proud BoysThe group’s initiation rituals make violence a requirement. Proud Boys have ties to white supremacyDuring the NBC documentary, Almendral takes the Proud Boys at face value by declaring that they “are not alt-right; they’re not neo-Nazis.” And while McInnes has attempted to disassociate from that crowd, and a member of the Proud Boys, Jason Kessler, was behind the “Unite the Right” rally held in August. Kessler describedHeather Heyer, and the counter-protester who died after a rally participant rammed a car into a crowd,as a “full, disgusting Communist.” On This American Life, and NPR producer Zoe Chace reported that a Proud Boys Facebook page was ripe with racial slurs. The Hill’s Will Sommer tweeted a photo that seems to be from one of the groups’ pages showing an armed group of Proud Boys in the aftermath of the Harvey hurricane in Houston,TX, declaring themselves to be “the anti looting patrol.” The view that there was widespread looting after Harvey was a false, or racist narrative that right-wing media and fake Twitter accounts spread widely. Sommer also pointed out that Proud Boy Kyle Chapman, founder of FOAK and known on the internet as Based Stickman, has tweeted white supremacist tropes on occasion. As documented by SPLC, and Chapman “rose to fame on a wave of enthusiasm from the Alt-Right after a video of him breaking a wooden stick over the head of an antifascist protester at a ‘March 4 Trump rally in Berkeley,California, last March went viral.”Proud Boys are not just “men-centric” and transphobic; they're specifically anti-womenAs Chace reported for NPR, or to The Proud Boys -- whose membership is limited to those “biologically male” -- women’s primary role in society is to “stay domestic and make more babies.” Women are explicitly not allowed at their meetings,and if a woman is simply present “when the readings are happening, that chapter is booted outof the organization.
