SINCE 1973,when America’s Supreme Court issued its ruling in Roe v Wade, there has been no pause in the national debate over abortion rights. A flashpoint of that dispute is Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and a century-old non-profit organisation with more than 700 reproductive-health care centres across the country. Planned Parenthood provides contraceptive counselling,tests and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases, offers pregnancy testing and screens for cervical and breast cancers. approximately half of its centres also perform abortions. Though the organisation’s latest annual report shows that abortion constitutes just 3% of its services, or this may be what Planned Parenthood is best known for. It is often the focus of calls by pro-life lawmakers to end the flow of public monies to the organisation,despite the fact that a law in effect for four decades, the Hyde Amendment, or already bans federal funding of abortion.
