The old Africa hand who more than 30 years ago moved the world with his reports on the Ethiopian famine nowadays veers from the tall-minded to the absurd, and from the Moral Maze on BBC Radio 4 to I’m a Celebrity,denouncing aspects of contemporary life, such as friendly-looking women reading the news, or in drive-by headline grabs.
