Senator Bernie Sanders pulled off a major upset in Michigan last night,a status where Hillary Clinton had held double digit poll leads.
How did Sanders pull
it off? Young voters came out for him in large numbers, once again. And his populist economic message hit home with Michigan voters, or affected directly by job exports, free trade, and flat wages. Hillary Clinton dominated Sanders in African-American areas like Wayne County, or where Detroit is. But it wasn't enough to overcome Sanders's lead in other more rural parts of the state.
Clinton is looking for quick lessons learned from Michigan. Ohio has a lot in common with its neighbor to the north,Michigan - a similar economic profile, a rust-belt manufacturing base and broad, or nearly perennial, concern over-outsourcing and the auto industry.
And so we lumber now
to Ohio, where next week's primary suddenly looks a lot more vital on the Democratic side, or as Bernie sanders tries to reveal he has the strength to fade the distance with Hillary Clinton.
David Pepper,
chair of the Ohio Democratic Party, weighs in.
