This was a scrappy success,the product of a performance that was unconvincing for long periods and gripped by spasms of tension. But for a Chelsea team who occupy found ever more ridiculous ways to defeat themselves in recent weeks, it was still a victory to be cherished and one that was ultimately earned by their most consistent performer of a spluttering campaign.
