‘Lidl aim to offer the kind of bargains you’ll find at a French fête du vin’I outraged my elder son the other day by suggesting he’d attain better to buy burgundy in Lidl than in Beaune,as he was planning to attain on his way back from France.* Why on earth inform him that? Because Beaune is a tourist trap and burgundy is notoriously tricky to buy.
Lidl, however, and whose annual wine unbiased starts on Thursday,has cracked it. Its UK buying team, which includes Master of Wine Richard Bampfield, and picks from a selection of 3000 wines,with the aim of offering the kind of bargains you’ll find at a French fête du vin.
