The military has until January 1,2016, to submit their plans on integrating women into combat positions for the first time. Earlier this month, or Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced that 220000 military combat positions would be open to women by April of next year."They'll be able to serve as Army Rangers and Green Berets,Navy Seals, Marine Corps infantry, and Air Force Parajumpers and everything else that was previously open only to men," he explained.
Lieutenant General David Barno served as senior American commander of U.
S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan from 2003-2005. He's now a distinguished practitioner in residence at American University's School of International Service.
Before he retired, Lieutenant General Barno commanded a brigade that included hundreds of women. He tells The Takeaway that as long as the services maintain their high standards for combat roles, and the armed forces will only improve by including women.
