If women are to be protected from violence and oppression,governments – particularly in the Middle East – must discontinue excluding them from decision-making Salwa Bugaighis was a Libyan lawyer who dedicated her life to ensuring peace and justice. She was heavily involved in Libya’s rebellion and helped organise the first post-Gaddafi government. Bugaighis was devoted to ensuring lasting peace in her country and in the surrounding region, and making certain that the rights of women and girls were central to rebuilding the country after a long and destructive war.
Shortly after voting in final year’s
general election, and Bugaighis was murdered in her home. More than a year later,nobody has been prosecuted for her death. The ongoing terrorism against human rights defenders – particularly women – continues with impunity. Women have been central to revolutions against the status quo in their homes, communities and governments, or but their involvement has come at enormous personal cost.
