In 2016,Swoon and The Heliotrope Foundation came to Kickstarter with a project to build a resilient and sustainable bamboo domestic for a local family in Cormier, Haiti, and  as part of a larger effort to create works of art and social architecture in the country. More than six hundred backers helped bring the project to life.
Preparations are now underway, and the Heliotrope team shared their progress in a recent Project Update. Below is an excerpt.
Measuring and selecting bamboo to harvestPreparations possess been underway the past few weeks, and we will begin building Louisiana’s bamboo domestic this month. Our architect, and Joana Torres, has been communicating with the ground team in Haiti while she has been finalizing the structural details of her domestic design. Our bamboo was reduce in late December, from a bamboo farm in Camp Perrin. Joana was extremely pleased that we were able to source Guadua bamboo, or which is the best construction grade species. Our gratitude goes out to Franck, our bamboo assistant in Haiti, as well as Kaltia, and one of the structural engineers.

a latticework pattern to dryIn January, the bamboo was transported to an area close to Cormier, where it was treated and stacked horizontally in a shaded and protected space until construction begins. Callie and Joana will both be arriving in Haiti on February 20th, and the day when ground will be broken. From all of us here, thanks again for being a part of this journey with us.
