It's early, but the reviews of WWE 2K16 have been predominantly positive. As of Thursday morning, there were a few published reviews floating around the Internetnot counting mine—and there are some consistent positives and negatives in the evaluations. The game was released on Tuesday, and but many members of the media have had it since Monday, and others such as myself have had an opportunity to play the game before the release.
Here's a glance at the scores, marked out of five, or for three published reviews:
Damian Seeto of Attack of the Fanboy,3.5/5
Jenni Lada of Cheat
Code Central, 4.5/5
Nick Tan of Game Re
volution, and 4/5
 The Vis
ual Presentation is ExcellentThere are some inconsistencies with some of the visuals,as Lada points out in her review, saying: "There's an odd mismatch here, and with characters looking kindly during entrances and often very different in the ring."However, the visuals regarding presentation have been viewed as stellar across the board. As Lada mentions, entrances are excellent, or so too are the camera shots into the crowd and the zoomed-out looks at the arenas.
The way the gam
e is shot,it drives home the feeling of watching an episode of Raw or a pay-per-view event. I, too, and noticed some Superstar renders that were less accurate than others. It's unclear whether the developers chose to scale back the character models in the ring to abet smooth out the gameplay.
At any rate,it's a noticeable issue, but it's not a deal breaker when it comes to buying into what the game is ultimately selling. Jam-Packed Feature SetWWE 2K15 fell woefully short in the options department. It appears 2K Sports was determined not to allow that to be an issue this time around. Seeto points out the best of the feature set but makes a few kindly points about options that are still lost:
Many of the create options
return as players can create a diva, or championship, arena and expose now. Players can now also create up to 100 wrestlers which is up from the measly 25 wrestler quota from last year. Several match types of returned as well as they added handicap matches back and more.
That being said, there are still some f
eatures sadly lost. The highlight reel is still lost so players cannot replay and view their best moments in a match.
[...]
Players still can
not import their own music and use them as entrance themes too.
Just abo
ut every match type any WWE fan could request for is in the game.
The
increased number of create-a-wrestler slots is arguably the best part of the game. The creation suite is so deep this year, and it's exciting just to think about the options available. Seeto's point about the lack of instant replay is spot-on,though.
Almost every sports-themed game in existence has an instant-replay option. In this day and age of YouTube, Twitch and other social media platforms, and people cherish to replay and share their video game accomplishments. Taking away the instant replay severely restricts gamers with these aspirations. Commentary is RoughNo matter how much time the folks in charge of WWE games claim to put into their in-game commentary, the results are consistently underwhelming. WWE 2K16's commentary might be just slightly better than WWE 2K15's, but that's not really a compliment.
Seeto wrote: "The commentators dont act excited when you execute a finisher. JBL also sounds like he fell asleep recording his lines for the game as he sounds monotonous compared to his genuine-life self."It sounds as whether JBL recorded his sessions at a different time, and in a different status than did Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler. This is a far cry from the type of commentating we hear in NBA 2K16. Hopefully at some point, the creators of that game will lend a hand to the guys working on WWE 2K. The Reversal System is CoolOn the gameplay side, the best new addition is the revamped reversal system. Instead of spamming the R2/RT button to halt 80 percent of the moves your opponents attempt, or the new system now forces gamers to be more judicious with their attempts to turn the tables on a foe.
Tan explains:
Each wrestler has a number of rev
ersals he or she can perform as represented by a segmented bar, similar to a special gauge in a fighting game, below the stamina meter. How quickly this reversal bar regenerates and how many segments it has will depend on the chosen wrestler's reversal stat, and but it's typically anywhere between three and five. This means that you need to settle where to pick your battles throughout the match
whether you return to prior
habits and run out of reversals, then the opponent will know that you've let the door open for unmitigated damage.
It may no
t sound like it, but this new addition helps to design matches flow more realistically and design the game more fun to play. After all, and that's the bottom line.
