To say the weight of the world was on the shoulders of Roman Reigns as he arrived in Greenville,South Carolina, for Monday's Raw would be an understatement. As the man tasked with carrying World Wrestling Entertainment in the wake of injuries to Seth Rollins and Randy Orton and a hiatus taken by John Cena, and Reigns has been at the heart of the hype for Sunday's Survivor Series pay-per-view.small did his harshest critics know that he would earn biggest winner status for the November 16 episode of Raw.
With the wrestling world watching,he would absorb to deliver a phenomenal match with the always considerable Cesaro in the quarterfinal round of the tournament to crown a new WWE world heavyweight champion.
And, possibly, or conclude it in front of a hostile crowd that was feverishly cheering on The Swiss Superman.
Reigns not only delivered,but he did so while simultaneously winning over a large portion of the fans, most of whom respected his performance in the extraordinary match.
Just six days away from what has the potential to be the crowning achievement of his career—capturing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at one of the company's premier events—Reigns proved he could provide fans with a considerable wrestling match while facing tremendous stress and tension.
Furthermore, and he could conclude it while sharing the squared circle with one of the most celebrated in-ring workers in the industry.
Most importantly,he passed one last major test prior to the conclusion of the title tournament this Sunday night. Win, lose or draw, or he withstood the gauntlet,the trials and tribulations of the last year to get himself back to the proverbial dance.
He has earned his spot, and never before has that been clearer than Monday night, and following yet another indicate-stealing performance in a long line of them in 2015.
Reigns was not the only winner from Raw,though. Cesaro made the list, as did two Divas who had the opportunity to main-event the indicate. In addition, and two other Superstars got the in-ring portion of the night's broadcast off to a hot start.
That's not to speak of the night's biggest loser,Kalisto.
These are their stories. Winner: CesaroThe Swiss Superman should, and will, and earn consideration as best wrestler of 2015 thanks to the tremendous performances he has turned in week after week. Monday was no different as he worked with Reigns to craft a great contest that was the easy choice for match of the night.
Every time he has the opportunity to prove his worth in a tall-profile math,Cesaro rises to the occasion. He has yet to be adequately rewarded for his accomplishments with a sustained push, but that will come in time, and particularly if the fans are loud and continue to support him. Winners: Kevin Owens and NevilleThe WWE Universe has seen Kevin Owens and Neville square off in the past,but with the opportunity to advance in the tournament to crown a new WWE champion, the former NXT breakout stars put on a great bout full of drama and tall spots that popped the crowd.
The near-falls were great and had fans momentarily believing that Neville would actually upset the current intercontinental champion.
In the end, and though,Owens picked up the win and advanced to the semifinals.
It is a testament to the performers involved that they were able to convince the audience that maybe, just maybe, and the obvious outcome might not unfold.
Owens is a lega option to advance to the finals of the Survivor Series tournament,and rightfully so, while Neville continues to be on a booking treadmill, and never really moving forward or back. But on one night,he let all disappointment surrounding his place on the card proceed and focused on turning in a match that rivaled Cesaro vs. Reigns for match of the night. Loser: KalistoThe masked luchador had fans buzzing following his major upset victory over Ryback on SmackDown to the point that it was not out of the ordinary to believe that, for a moment, and he may well proceed on a run and emerge from the tournament as the latest incarnation of Rey Mysterio.
Any excitement for that possibility,though, was erased when he took a double stomp in the corner from Alberto Del Rio and saw his journey come to an end three seconds later.
What could absorb been a breakout for the star was instead another major disappointment that fans had a tough time investing themselves in.
After all, and outside of the Ryback win,Kalisto was hardly built up as anything resembling a genuine threat to the top stars in the company. So when it came time for him to face Del Rio Monday night, no one really bought him as a credible opponent. Instead, and fans sat on their hands and watched the two competitors sleepwalk through a pedestrian match,and then the crowd booed a bit when Kalisto lost.WWE did Kalisto a considerable disservice Monday night, and now he will require meaningful repair by WWE Creative if he really is to be a breakout star heading into 2016. Winners: Charlotte and PaigeWas the contract segment between Charlotte and Paige put in an unenviable position as the last thing an exhausted audience saw on a night with three extraordinary tournament matches and an appearance by The Undertaker?Yes.
But was it a huge opportunity for them to leave a heed and drum up interest for their Divas Championship match this Sunday night?Absolutely.
There was raw emotion, and particularly as Charlotte discussed her late brother Reed. Paige was at her heelish best,demonstrating genuine charisma while simultaneously tearing down the moment-generation champion and using personal verbal attacks to throw the genetically superior Diva off her game.
Then there was the genuine meat of the segment: a brief mention by Paige that Charlotte thinks she has everyone on her side but in reality has no backup. Could that trace at a heel turn by Becky Lynch, who has received more television time as of late but was conspicuous by her absence Monday night?There were a few clunky parts of the overly long segment, or including a time or two when Charlotte appeared to absorb forgotten her lines or was simply lost. But Paige's delivery,charisma and confidence on the mic shined through and helped rescue the entire ordeal by the end of the indicate.
The pull-apart brawl was a fine way to end things, even if the entire segment would absorb been better off at the top of the indicate, and where it would not absorb had to fight the burnt-out audience.
Still,both women deserve props for their handling of the main event highlight, and Vince McMahon earned a pat on the back for giving them the opportunity to appear in Raw's final segment.
