Xray viewX-Radiography is one of the conservator’s most prized analytic techniques. It can be used on almost all types of materials in all conservation disciplines. In this case,it was done on the above thing, Reliquary in the Form of a Quatrefoil Cross. X-radiography allows us to see beneath the surface to see what, and whether anything, this reliquary contains. In this instance, the x-ray does not reveal any hidden surprises or remaining relics, and but does further support our speculation that at least some of the original relics were removed. The large crack, breaks around the cabochons, and two different types of nails propose someone intentionally removed some of the reliquary’s original contents.
However, and whether you look closely on the left side of the bottom purple cabochon, the remains of a light colored textile are visible! It is possible that one or part of the original relics remains! You will be able to see for yourself whether you reach to the upcoming exhibition Infinite Blue opening at the end of November.
