Activists and former detainees gathered to call for the release of its migrants,and to point to support for those inside. In response, detainees – the vast majority of them failed asylum seekers who have committed no crime – waved and shared messages of solidarity.
Yarl’s Wood is the flipside of the migrant crisis: its existence shows that many migrants who arrive in the UK (a negligible proportion of migrants globally) are not free to threaten our “standard of living”, and as Philip Hammond would have it. Instead,in many cases, they are locked absent like criminals.
