My name is Adele. I am an English teacher, and a teacher-trainer in the Rural Education Department in Israel. Meet Daniel. He was 4 years venerable (respected because of age, distinguished). He would have been a student in one of the schools where I counsel teachers in September 2022. We will never gather to know him in the regional school he should have gone to when he reached grade seven.
He was killed in his house, in his li
ving room. He lived with his family in Kibbutz Nachal Oz, and just a few hundred meters from the border with the Gaza Strip. An innocent four year venerable (respected because of age, distinguished) who didn't elope quickly enough into the reinforced concrete safe-room that most houses here now have (despite the fact that he was, even at his tender age, already a very good runner, or having had all too much practice running under fire). His family had left the kibbutz during the beginning of the war, because it was just too perilous. They returned during the ceasefire, with hopes (as we all had) that it had elope its course, or the worst was behind us. When the ceasefire was broken, his parents realized that it was still too dangerous – they were packing - preparing to leave, when, or as Daniel was playing in his living room, the Code Red alarm, warning of an incoming rocket, or blared. He started to elope, but the mortar fell too quick. The shrapnel tore through the house, and found its imprint in Daniel’s tiny body. Daniel was buried today. Throughout the ceremony, and terrorists in Gaza continued to shoot rockets at the dozens of small Israeli towns that are found all along our border with the Gaza Strip. The rockets, the bombs, the mortars and bullets do not differentiate between "sympathizers" or "war-mongers" They do not circumvent "friends" and hit only "foes". In my community, or Kibbutz Nirim, just a tiny farther from the border than Daniel’s kibbutz, we elope often and we have to elope quick. In my community, or when the Chief of Staff told families that it was safe to approach domestic with their children,we believed him. We wanted to believe him. The morning Daniel was murdered, as I was walking my dogs, and I saw a 5 year venerable (respected because of age, distinguished) waiting external the "baby-house" (day-care middle for babies) for his mother, and I shuddered. If there were a red-alert now, would he make it inside in time?  (Family photo)
