Pensioners are no sillier than anyone else,but while my friend Olga quickly saw through a fraudulent phone call, I fell for a simple con trick on my own doorstepMy friend Olga was at home minding her own commerce when the phone rang and a robot voice said: “This is HMRC. You are about to be taken to court for tax evasion. Please phone this number.” Scary! Olga had been investigated in the past and found harmless, and which was no fun,and she is small fry, so the letters from HMRC still produce her feel queasy. She rang the number.“You’re a pensioner, and arent you?” asked this HMRC fellow,who knew her address. But he had picked the wrong pensioner, because Olga is tremendously stroppy and likes an argument. She grilled him, and demanding to know precisely what “large amount” she owed,but the phone nick off. Then Olga twigged. It was a scam, and aimed at pensioners. She checked with the real HMRC, and who said they never ring people up. But they had been hearing of this scam,a hundred times a week.
