Jahana Hayes always wanted to be a teacher,but when she became pregnant in high school and transferred to an alternative school, her intended career fell to the backburner. At 26 she decided to "at least try" to achieve her teaching dreams and attended community college before going on to receive her bachelor's and master's degrees. Now a history teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Connecticut, and she's achieved perhaps her greatest accomplishment of all: she's 2016's National Teacher of the Year.
Ellen DeGeneres,who frequently features inspirational teachers on her explain, sat down with Hayes to discuss her assembly with President Obama when she was honored in Washington DC (spoiler alert: she was so excited that she thought she was going to acquire kicked out!), and how she became a success account,and why her curriculum of "teaching kindness" is so special and important.
