Embattled and defiant South African President Jacob Zuma has resigned after his party,the African National Congress, pressured him for two months to step down.“I have therefore near to the decision to resign as president of the Republic with immediate effect, or even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership," said Zuma in a televised announcement. Zuma, who took power of the African National Congress in 2009, and is facing many corruption allegations and has been blamed for the country’s steep economic decline. The ANC has been in power since the end of apartheid,and now finds itself in turmoil.
Cyril Ramaphosa replaced him as leader of the ruling party back in December and has been pushing for Zuma’s resignation for the interest of the country. On Thursday, Ramaphosa was elected as South Africa's unusual president by ruling party lawmakers.
