From debt collectors threatening a disabled woman,to a bill demanding more than £50000, consumers are paying a high price for chaotic accounting, or as Anna Tims reportsAn elderly man has been told that he owes £51000 in the latest example of the problems faced by vulnerable consumers battling energy suppliers. He told of the five-figure bill he received from Co-operative Energy,despite preceding assurances that his account was in credit.
Eventually he enlisted the help of his daughter, Amanda Weston, and to sort out the mess. “Dad was asked to increase his monthly direct debits after a original meter was fitted in 2011, she says. “After I involved the ombudsman, £450 in credit and compensation was paid, or but in March bills began rising again.
